KAHAYAN LONGHOUSE CULTURAL TOUR 10 DAYS

Day 1 ARRIVAL PALANGKARAYA – START CRUISE

Meet at Palangkaraya Airport and transfer to the Rahai’i Pangun in Palangkaraya harbor to start your journey. Cruise past the stilted and floating houses of the provincial capital and continue along the forested river, passing villages to your first sighting of the magnificent orangutan. In the early evening, take a canoe through the shimmering black water lake and make a short stop and stroll around the Kalaweit island. Keep an eye out for proboscis monkeys, hornbills and Brahmini kites. Return to the Rahai’i Pangun a quiet dinner in the midst of the forest. [L/D]

Day 2 KALAWEIT – BAPALLAS ISLAND – KANARAKAN - TAHAI

The Rahai’i Pangun moves upstream along the Rungan River while you enjoy breakfast. On arrival at Bapallas Island, we will take the motorised canoe to observe orangutans. Learn about the BOSF pre-release program as you watch orangutans in their natural habitat. Leisurely lunch onboard while cruising to Kanarakan, a tiny riverside village on the Rungan River. We pass Kaja pre-release orangutan island alond the route. Arriving in the village in the afternoon, village elders from the Dayak Ngaju tribe perform a welcoming ceremony before we stroll around the village. Joined by a local host, we see the village home gardens, rubber field & rubber tapping demonstration, and other village livelihoods. Visit the elder’s house and enjoy the traditional spices coffee or herbal tea while sharing stories. Back to the boat and cruise down to Lake Tahai. Overnight. [B/L/D]

Day 3 TAHAI – SEI GOHONG – BAPALLAS & KALAWEIT

Optional dawn canoeing to the lake for bird watching.

Leisurely breakfast on board. Visit the village of Sei Gohong to meet the traditional medicine expert then a short walk to the nearby forest to find several plants that are used as traditional medications by the Ngajus. Back to the village and see a larger collection of the traditional medicines and discuss their functions with the locals. Back to the boat and cruise down stream to Kalaweit passing Bapallas island for more orangutan sightings. Overnight near Kalaweit. [B/L/D]

Day 4 KALAWEIT – BUKIT RAWI – MUARA RUNGAN

After breakfast, cruise to Bukit Rawi. On arrival, meet the children musicians and dancers who will perform traditional music & dancing entertainment. Visit the lady rattan weavers to see how thorny rattans are turned into beautifully woven bags and other handycrafts. Then visit the Tuwung village to see the beautifully carved and painted sandungs (bone houses) and learn about the Dayak Ngaju burial rituals. Back to the boat and cruise down stream to Muara Rungan. Overnight. [B/L/D]

Day 5 PALANGKARAYA - TUMBANG MALAHOI

Transfer from the hotel to Tumbang Malahoi by air conditioned car (approx 5 hours). Simple lunch on the way. On arrival, a welcome ceremony will be performed beforesettling into your room at the longhouse and resting. Later join the family of the

longhouse for dinner. Gather after dinner to talk with the elders about the history of thislonghouse and everyday life here, the culture and traditions.[B/L/D]

Day 6 JUNGLE WALK – MUSICAL PERFORMANCE

After breakfast, a local guide will take you trekking in the forest near the longhouse to see ironwood or rubber tree plantation area. See how to take latex from the trees and listen to the Dayak agricultural philosophy. After lunch together at the longhouse with the family, visit a Kaharingan (the Dayak traditional religion) temple. Enjoy the evening with musical performance and dance. Learn some stories behind some particular dances and play traditional music instruments [B/L/D]

Day 7 MALAHOI - TEWAH - KUALA KURUN

After breakfast, we pack the bags and say goodbye to the people of the longhouse. Set out by 4WD to see the Dayak holy rocks at Batu Suli, soaring above the Kahayan River, and continue to the town of Tewah. See the magnificently carved totem poles in the Kahayan style in burial areas. Overnight in simple hotel at Kuala Kurun.[B/L/D]

Day 8 KUALA KURUN - PALANGKARAYA

Set out from Kuala Kurun for the return trip to Palangkaraya. Stop along way to see totem poles and to have a simple meal. Check in to the Aquarius Hotel in Palangkaraya. Evening at your leisure. [B/-/-]

Day 9 PALANGKARAYA – CITY TOUR

After breakfast, your guide will take you to the visit the Museum to learn about Dayak birth, marriage and death traditions through the fascinating artifacts on display. City Tour of Palangkaraya, visiting the original boardwalk village, Pahandut, handicraft markets and a meal of traditional Dayak grilled seafood on river bank. Evening free
